I’m the type who has to change my desktop background every few weeks. Luckily the life cycle of my designs on this site is a bit longer than that, but it’s time for a new look. Here’s what the old site looked like:
I can hardly stand it now. What was I thinking? I don’t know. But I like the clean look of this new site a lot better:
The front page is a bit more consolidated and hopefully more useful. (In the previous incarnation, it was just a launchpad. That bothered me since most of the time when I went there, I was trying to get to the latest post on my blog.)
And here’s what a full blog post looks like:
Still not perfect, of course, and I’ve got a few small things left to tweak, but I think I can live with this one for a while.

I like this new look. A lot! It’s very clean line and library-esque. Excellent!
Only thing that will take getting used to is having to click to get to the full post, but I’m sure that won’t be very hard.
Thanks! Let me know if the clicking to get to the full post becomes irritating.
The clicking to the full post has become irritating. Seriously.
I do like the general design though.
Also, the comments at the bottom get formatted all weird (maybe this is an IE problem?). Like, the comment right now has Alyssa’s name under what you wrote and then her comment to the left under your name. It does this on other posts as well.
I think your site, as always, looks great. But I had a funny thought… When I saw the screen shots of the title on your blog, I could only make out your name; I could tell there was text above and below, but couldn’t read it. So my first thought was “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”. I think it may be a very similar font. Just made me think of the movie. It’s not a criticism at all; I just found it amusing.
By the by, every time you update your website, it makes me want to update mine. I don’t have time for this, Ben! ;)
Alyssa: Fixed. :)
Ginger: Which version of IE are you using? In all honesty I don’t really care about IE — if it works in Firefox and Safari then I’m happy (and since this is a personal site I’m okay with doing that) — but if it’s a simple fix, I’ll take care of it.
Mel: That’s actually where the idea came from (and the reason I expanded my name on the banner from Ben to Benjamin). :) I haven’t seen the movie yet; I suppose the stronger influence was this iPhone edition of the short story that I bought a month or two ago, and the icon was what made me think of it. Sorry about making you want to update your site, btw. ;)
I just pulled it up in Safari (which magically appeared on my computer one day) and everything looks perfect. Darn me and my set in IE and Windows ways. I really don’t know which version I use or how to tell. Hm…I’m a failure. If it gets annoying, I’ll just look at it in Safari.
Oh wait, I think I found that I’m using IE 7.0.6
I don’t know if you did something or if it is just some sort of blog-land voodoo, but the comments don’t look all wonky anymore.
Weird. But a good kind of weird. :) (I moved the permalink over to the right and added the timestamp, but I don’t know why that would have changed it.) Oh well, I’m glad it works now. :)
