I know it’s only been like a week, but the typography on this site was bothering me, so I’ve tweaked it, along with the color scheme (which was regrettably hard to read).
Before (actually, I had already changed the body text to Georgia here; it was Helvetica Neue):
After:
Not perfect yet — I’ve got a few things I still want to change — but this’ll have to do for now since I’ve got an avalanche of other stuff to get done over the next week or two. C’est la vie. The simplification effort is…still underway, though usually floundering, sadly.

Ah, Ben, thank you! The gray is much, much better than the black. I couldn’t bring myself to read anything on the old design. This is lovely. The centered blog post titles are bothering me, though. Probably because I’m not used to blog post titles being centered. I’ve never even thought about it before. Funny how you don’t notice how things are composed until the composition changes.
Glad you turned the comments back on. So much cosier. :-)
Glad to hear it, and yes, I wish I’d been wise enough to figure it out from the beginning. Oh well — no harm in making a few mistakes here and there. As for the centered headings, I really liked the blog titles being in the center (made it feel like a magazine of sorts), but in combination with the right-aligned stuff on the left, it felt weird. The centered headings would only work if everything were centered. Anyway, I’ve left-aligned the headings and will leave it as-is for now so I can focus on moving the rest of the content over from Blank Slate.
I disagree that everything needs to be centered aligned for the heading to be.
In novels all the time the headings are aligned but the text is not.
Oh, PS. I like the centered headings best… if you couldn’t tell :P
I wasn’t very clear in that comment, I realize now. :) By “everything” I meant the stuff on the left, not the text. (If you have different alignments on the pages of a novel, they’re still within the box of the page, whereas with this site as it currently stands, the logo and navigation are outside of that and it’s jarring.) I do plan to return to the centered headings as soon as I can rework the site so it feels harmonious.
Ahhh.
And now we’re trying centered everything. Not sure how I feel about it yet. :)
Hmm. I think I like it.
Much easier to read. Way to go.
