Matrimonies ‘r’ us

Finally. After months of teasing and premonitions, the I-told-you-so has solidly arrived: my sister April got engaged last night. I pretty much knew it was coming all along — it was a question of when, not if.

This marks sister #2 for matrimony. (And I only have two sisters.) Being the oldest, I figured I’d probably be the first to get hitched, but I keep getting one-upped by the young’uns. :P I’m just crossing my fingers that my 19-year-old brother (who leaves next month for a mission to Hong Kong) doesn’t get married before me. Because that would mean…well, let’s not go there. ;)

Anyway, it is interesting being the older unwed sibling, certainly. Lots of “your time will come” assurances from everyone. I should start milking the pity for a profit… :P No, really, it doesn’t bother me too much. The chronology of sibling marriages is pretty irrelevant on almost every value system I can think of — the only thing it messes up is the ages of our kids, really. My sisters’ kids will be older than mine (the first ones, that is), which means they’ll have a hard time remembering how old me and my sisters are relative to each other. But that’s a small price to pay. (And yes, my sisters’ kids will be older, for those of you who’re thinking I can still catch up. Sister #1 is already carrying a little girl inside her tummy, you see, ETA August or September.)

I’m happy for April. And Aaron. He’s a great guy and has my complete approval (for what older-brotherly support is worth). I’m lucky in that way — as a relatively protective brother, I wouldn’t want my sisters marrying sleazebags. And they haven’t/aren’t. Both guys are absolutely wonderful. And Aaron’s family is great, too. (Hey, Annegirl, looks like we’ll be in-laws come August. Cool. :))

All told, I’m just glad Aaron’s finally popped the question so I don’t have to keep guarding myself from accidentally saying something about it in front of him or his family. :P

Haha. And then there was me…

Thursday last:

“So, Cathy. We’re all placing bets on when the wedding will be. What’s your vote?”

Way to be sensitive, Ben. Hopefully some of that will rub off on your new in-laws. =) We’re excited about having April join the club, too. Complete approval both ways.

George: :)

Annie: Haha, I heard about that. :) Though I don’t know if I can claim that much sensitivity — remember that luncheon thingie at the library conference back in January? I almost introduced you to my co-workers as my future sister-in-law. It was pure luck that I didn’t blurt it out, especially seeing as April and Aaron had barely started dating then. Pure luck.

A joke I once heard (it didn’t come from me)…

A good way to take care of aunts and uncles who come up to you at each wedding you go to and ask, “so, will the next one be yours?”

At each funeral, go up to each such aunt and uncle and ask, “so, will the next one be yours?”
