Of small islands

Just a quick bit of news: my brother Daniel got his mission call today, and he’s going to (drum roll) Hong Kong! :) He’s the next missionary to serve since I got back from Thailand. And he’s serving in Asia! I mean, sure, it would’ve been splendidly celestial if he’d gotten called to my beloved Thailand, but Hong Kong is pretty darn close. Mmm. Already I feel like my connection to my mission has been forged anew merely by association. The memories are flooding back… This is awesome. I’m excited.

Oh, and now I have a good motivation to learn Cantonese. :P

I think that they often call families to the same region of the world. My Dad served in Germany, my brother served in Spain, my sister served in Germany, I served in France, and my younger brother just got called to England.

There is something fishy going on here if you ask me.

Very cool. Thai will gives you several legs up on Cantonese, even some ways that it wouldn’t for Mandarin.

Good motivation to learn Cantonese? You have to associate it with a person rather than the typical “I just want to learn yet ANOTHER language?” Come on Ben…I don’t believe that one for a second. ;)

From what I remember, Cantonese is the language of complaining…have fun.

Alyssa: Thanks. :)

Xister: Haha, some celestial conspiracy, perhaps? :P

rikker: Do expound; I don’t know enough about either Cantonese or Mandarin to know how Thai’s an advantage here. :)

Mali: Yeah, I know, but it sounded like a good end to the post. :P No, really, it’s nice having external motivation for studying a language — keeps you on track.
