BYU Publishers Fair

On Tuesday we had a joint New Play Project workshop with the BYU group Write2Publish (which went really well!), and while there I found out about the upcoming Publishers Fair. It’s on April 9 (two weeks from yesterday) from noon to 5 p.m. in the Wilkinson Center Garden Court. And I’m pretty excited about it, considering my new career shift. :)

Basically, the BYU Publication Lab (along with BYU-AML) has invited publishers and editors to come to BYU so aspiring writers can meet them (and network :)), ask them what kind of manuscripts they’re looking for, pitch ideas for books or articles, and even bring manuscripts (if they have a cover letter and SASE, that is). If you’re in the area and interested in writing or publishing, you need to come. Seriously. I’ll definitely be there. Now if only I had a full manuscript to bring… (I’m trying to decide whether I should try writing one before then. :)

Anyway, if you have questions about the fair, you can e-mail the Publication Lab at publish at byu dot edu, call them at 801.422.9316, or just stop by (they’re in the Harold B. Lee Library in the southeast corner of the Info Commons area).

Here’s the press release:

On Wednesday, April 9, BYU’s Publication Lab and the BYU Chapter of the Association for Mormon Letters will sponsor a Publishers Fair from noon until 5 p.m. in the Garden Court of the Wilkinson Center.

This annual event provides students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends the opportunity to meet with editors from a range of markets, such as Deseret Book, Cedar Fort, LDS Church Magazines, and Utah Historical Quarterly.

Editors will meet with prospective authors, illustrators, photographers, and editing students to examine their work and offer suggestions and sometimes even jobs.

Authors who wish to submit their work to a publisher should bring either a query letter and synopsis or the manuscript in proper format along with a submission letter and a self-addresssed, stamped envelope. BYU’s Publication Lab can offer assistance with preparation, queries, and submission letters. The lab is open daily, noon to 5, in the Info Commons of the Harold B. Lee Library.
