The platonic God

Thanks to Leandro for tipping me off to a Deseret News article Orson Scott Card wrote this past Friday.

It all comes down to what we mean by “God.” In one sense, we’re in perfect agreement. We all point to the Bible and say, “We believe in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, that he is divine himself, and that only by his grace can we be cleansed of our sins and return to the presence of the Father. As far as I’m concerned, anybody who believes that is a Christian. You can be wrong about a lot of the details, but all who accept Christ’s divinity and try to live by his teachings are Christians. However, something happened between the writing of the Bible and the settling of the traditional Christian doctrine of God. What came between them was Plato.

It’s a response (in a way) to the public’s response to Mitt Romney’s religion talk. And it’s a good defense of our conception of God. Read it. :) (It’s already the most-commented article on the Deseret News website, by the way. Go figure.)
