The Pinocchio complex

Today marks the beginning of Script Frenzy, a monthlong scriptwriting fest. As of a couple of days ago I finally have a computer again — a Linux box — and so I can once again write at my apartment. (I’ve always been able to write by hand, of course, but I can type much faster than I can write, so I’ve been waiting for this moment.) I downloaded CeltX (free scriptwriting software, very cool) and started plugging away on the first scene. To hit the 20,000-word total, I’ll have to write 667 words each day. (An awfully close-to-the-edge number, if you ask me. ;))

I’ve also dedicated 5:30-6:00 each morning to writing, and I plan to split it up between Script Frenzy and other projects (Like Father, Like Child, which is a collection of essays on creativity, and a bunch of the stories I started but never quite finished). Having a regularly scheduled time is going to be the trick. It won’t be long before I’m pumping out novels left and right, I bet. ;)

One last thing. I’ve realized that thus far, all the characters in my fiction have been very cardboard, if not one-dimensional in nature. It never dawned on me until just now. (I’m reading Orson Scott Card’s book How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy, and the section on character development really hit home, apparently.) Time to ditch the cardboard and start bringing flesh and blood to life. (So to speak.)

Ben,
I hope you have a lot of fun while writing this script (and many other works on your new computer.). Do you have a storyline thought up yet? What about a genre? Have you developed the characters in your head? Do you have twists, and plots mapped out? Or, are you figuring it out as you go along?

Ahhh, isn’t writing such a grand adventure? Even though you are the author, every story has a life of its own. Think of how long that poor story has waited for its chance to be written. I wonder what its opinion is of how you are writing it. I’m sure it will let you know. I can hear it now:

“Pssst…BEN…what are you thinking!!!! You can’t write me like that! HUMANS!!!…Ok, listen up, here is how it is suppose to go…Got it? Great! Now get back to work, I have waited too long for this!!!…Oh, this is going to be so good. I’m glad that I picked you to write me ;-) Now if we can just work out this communication issue…”

Like I said have fun writing. I can’t wait to see it when you’re finished.

LOL :) I’ve got the vague makings of a storyline simmering around in my head, but nothing’s come together yet. (The original idea came to me a couple of months ago, actually, but I did nothing with it.) At the moment I’m still discovering what the play’s about, but I plan to outline it soon so I can have at least a rough idea where I’m headed with it.
