We email. We wiki. We blog. We IM. We convince ourselves that as long as we can write well, these are all good forms of communication. Perhaps in some ways even better, since we’re not distracted (blinded, biased, seduced) by the person’s physical presence.
And we are wrong.
It’s a really interesting article on why we need face-to-face communication (body language, the subtle variations in emotion that can’t be represented in text, etc.). For me, I’m often more at ease through the written language (particularly in awkward situations :)), but I agree: real life is better.

I’ve prefered face-to-face communication for as long as I can remember (except when I want to avoid communication… then I like e-mail). I’d never considered a biological or emotional need for it though. Good article.
